About this workshop

Sustainable Floral Design is an engaging, beginner-friendly workshop that introduces students to environmentally conscious techniques for arranging flowers—without the use of floral foam or single-use plastics. Whether you’re brand new to floral design or looking to shift your practice toward more eco-friendly habits, this hands-on session offers a creative and supportive space to learn, experiment, and connect.

At the heart of this workshop is the idea that floral design can be both beautiful and responsible. You’ll work with fresh, seasonal flowers while exploring alternative methods for structure and support, including techniques using chicken wire, reusable mechanics, natural grids, and more. These methods are not only better for the environment, but they also allow for more dynamic, expressive arrangements.

This is a relaxed, social class designed for all skill levels. No prior experience is needed, and the workshop is open to anyone aged 15 and older. The small group size ensures that every student receives individualized instruction and feedback from the master instructors at the Cass School of Floral Design. With decades of combined teaching and design experience, our instructors bring a practical, encouraging approach to floral education.

In addition to hands-on arranging, you’ll also learn about the flowers themselves—how they grow, how to care for them for longer vase life, and how to choose or even forage materials responsibly. We'll explore the basics of botany and the historical use of floral materials, as well as how seasonality and locality play a role in sustainable design.

Students will also gain insight into broader floral design principles and current trends in the industry. We’ll look at how sustainability is influencing contemporary design practices, from large-scale event work to everyday home arrangements, and discuss career and creative opportunities that align with eco-conscious values.

Since its founding in 1979, the Cass School of Floral Design has educated thousands of students—from hobbyists to professional florists—through its commitment to high-quality instruction and a warm, welcoming learning environment. This workshop is part of that tradition: immersive, fun, and full of practical knowledge that students can take with them into their own homes, gardens, or careers.

All flowers, containers, and sustainable design tools are provided. You’ll leave the workshop with a completed arrangement that reflects your new skills, as well as the confidence to continue creating using eco-friendly methods. Whether you’re curious about design, passionate about the planet, or just looking for a unique and creative way to spend time with others, Sustainable Floral Design is a meaningful way to engage with flowers—and with the world around you.
