About this workshop

Coaxing Spring: A Groundhog Day Floral Workshop is a warm, colorful antidote to the quiet stretch of winter. Held in the heart of February, this uplifting floral arranging class invites you to gather with others, work with vibrant seasonal flowers, and create a joyful vase arrangement that brings life and optimism into your space. Rather than waiting for a forecast, we’ll take matters into our own hands and coax spring indoors through color, texture, and thoughtful design.

Designed to be fully beginner-friendly, this workshop is guided step by step by the master instructors at Cass. No prior floral experience is required, and all participants age 15 and above are welcome. Whether you come on your own, with a friend, or as part of a small group, the class is intentionally social and relaxed, making it easy to connect, learn, and enjoy the creative process together. Conversation flows naturally as flowers are unpacked, stems are trimmed, and arrangements begin to take shape.

Throughout the workshop, you’ll create a vivid vase arrangement using fresh flowers selected specifically to banish winter gray and introduce a hopeful hint of spring warmth. The focus is on bright, cheerful hues and lively seasonal blooms that feel energizing and optimistic. You’ll learn the foundations of floral arranging, including proportion, balance, color pairing, and stem placement, while also gaining simple, repeatable techniques you can use again and again throughout the winter months.

In addition to hands-on design instruction, the class offers a deeper look into the world of flowers. Attendees will learn about the flowers they’re working with, including their botanical characteristics, growing habits, and historical uses in floral design. The instructors will share insights on how and where to buy quality flowers, what to look for at markets and shops, and when it may be appropriate to forage responsibly. You’ll also receive practical care tips to help your arrangement stay fresh and beautiful for as long as possible once you bring it home.

The workshop also introduces participants to broader floral design concepts and trends. You’ll learn how seasonal availability influences design choices, how color theory shifts through the year, and how floral design can be both a creative outlet and a professional opportunity. For those curious about taking their interest further, the instructors will touch on pathways within floral design, from hobbyist practice to professional work.

Class size is intentionally kept small to maximize learning, creativity, and connection. This allows for plenty of individual attention and personalized guidance throughout the session. The master instructors at Cass bring years of hands-on floral design and teaching experience, and they tailor their instruction to meet each student where they are. Questions are encouraged, experimentation is welcomed, and every arrangement is treated as a unique expression.

The Cass School of Floral Design was founded in 1979 and has provided floral education to thousands of hobbyists and professional graduates alike. With decades of experience, Cass is known for blending strong technical foundations with an encouraging, inclusive learning environment. This workshop reflects that philosophy, offering structure without pressure and expertise without intimidation.

All flowers, containers, tools, and materials are included, and students take home the arrangement they create. By the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with a finished floral design, new skills, and a renewed sense of brightness during winter’s quieter days. Coaxing Spring is as much about community and creativity as it is about flowers, offering a welcoming space to learn, connect, and bring a little seasonal promise indoors.
